Waxahatchee Breaks Down “Fire” on Song Exploder: Listen

Music, News

Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield was the latest guest on the Song Exploder podcast, where she discussed her Saint Cloud track “Fire.” She spoke about struggling with writer’s block and how “Fire” sprung from a brief, spontaneous melody that she repeated on a drive home. Crutchfield also mentions that she’d gone through “a lot of dark stuff” around the time she wrote the track, having recently become sober. “I wanted to find a way to poetically say ‘I can love myself through this darkness that’s happening,” said. She also talks about working with producer Brad Cook and members of the group Bonny Doon. Listen to the full episode below.

Saint Cloud arrived in March. Waxahatchee’s previous LP was 2017’s Out in the Storm. In 2018, she shared her Great Thunder EP. Read Pitchfork’s Song by Song interview “Waxahatchee Breaks Down Every Song on Her New Album, Saint Cloud.”
